Near Sioma in south-western Barotseland the
Zambezi River's spectacular Ngonye Falls may be found. These falls are upstream from the
well-known Victoria Falls. The huge volume of water that rushes over the falls enters a
relatively narrow and deep section of the Zambezi River. Nearby is the southern part of
the large Western Zambezi Game Management Area which also surrounds the little-known Sioma
Ngwezi National Park [Map]

Journey from Maziba Bay Lodge to Ngonye Falls
|
An exciting approach to the Ngonye Falls is from
the nearby Maziba Bay Lodge. From Maziba Bay the falls can be approached by rubber duck
through some impressive rapids over a two kilometer stretch of the fast-flowing river. Several
crocodiles were spotted from the rubber duck as well as variety of birds such as Fish
Eagles and Rock Pratincoles. Hippo are also occasionally seen. |

Baby elephant Lilundu
|
A large sandy beach stretching
up from the Zambezi River is characteristic of Maziba Bay. One of the attractions at
Maziba Bay is a tame orphaned elephant known as Lilundu. It is believed that her mother was
killed by poachers not far from Maziba Bay.

Entering Chobe National Park in northern Botswana
|
Heavy rains during the last few days of our stay in Zambia forced us to
return to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. This road journey took us via Wenela Border Post
between Zambia and the Caprivi. After a night's stay near Katima Mulilo we entered
Botswana via Ngoma and travelled through northern Chobe National Park past Kasane to
Zimbabwe through Kazungula, just in time for a flight from Victoria Falls to Johannesburg
in South Africa - five countries within 24 hours! |
